Today I want to show you how to get out of the bronze league without using cheese, 1 base all-ins, or any other tactics that won’t make you a better Starcraft 2 player. Cheese and “1-basing” your opponent is 1 way to get promoted, but eventually you’ll hit a plateau where that 1 strategy doesn’t work anymore, and you’ll either have to find a new strategy (that won’t work very long either) or start over and learn how to macro.
The big problem I have with cheesing your opponent every time is that you don’t really get better at Starcraft 2. You just get better at performing that 1 cheese strategy. And usually, if your opponent holds it off you have no chance of winning because you don’t know how to follow it up.
Macro Is King At The Higher Levels
If you watch any pro games, you’ll notice that the games usually go long and are very macro based (meaning they expand a lot and have huge economies). If you ever want to get even close to that level, you need to STOP cheesing all the time. Instead, right from the beginning you should start developing good macro habits that will stick with you permanently.
But how do you get better at “macro?” A lot of people think it’s going to be too difficult, no fun, and they’ll never be able to do it so why bother.
Not true!
In fact, it’s almost the opposite. If you’ve got a plan (which I’m going to give you) it’s easy to develop good macro habits, and you’re going to have more fun, especially as you steamroll your way up the Battle.net ladder.
Here’s How To Get Better At Macro
First, you should download my free macro guide and read it right away! I’ve got some tips and tricks in there that you’ll need to know to execute this build most effectively.
So here’s the deal…I developed a macro build that is super-easy to execute (requires ~20 APM), will teach you very good SC 2 habits (that will help tremendously as you advance), and is very strong against all 3 races. In fact, this 1 build may even take you to Gold and beyond.
This build was inspired by Halby’s Mineral Drill practice build, which is another great way to practice macro. There’s just a few things I would do differently =)
Are you ready?
1 Build To Rule Them All
Like I said, this 1 build will work against every race at the lower levels of play. This is good for you because you don’t have to memorize 3 different builds (1 for TvT, 1 for TvP, 1 for TvZ), which also means you’ll get lots of practice with this 1 build, be able to perfect it, and quickly move up the ranks.
The whole goal of this build is to make you a better Starcraft 2 player through macro. After you have some good macro habits, then you can start throwing other things in like micro, more advanced strategies, etc. So during your games using this macro build, I want you to focus mainly on 3 things:
- Creating SCV’s constantly
- Building Supply Depots
- Training Units constantly
Other than that, just follow the build and I guarantee you’ll start winning more games.
How To Execute The 1 Build
The most important thing to remember with this build is we’re focusing on macro ONLY! Our goal is to develop good habits, so we’re going to be constantly watching our Barracks and Command Center to make units right before the previous one finishes (no queuing up a bunch of units). To be sure we don’t get supply blocked, we’re going to have 1 SCV (the one that builds your 2nd Supply Depot) constantly making Supply Depots. As soon as 1 finishes, make another.
Every attack you send should be attack-moved into the opponent’s base, don’t even watch them go over. Just focus entirely on your macro – SCVs, Supply Depots, Units.
Beginning Build Order
10 Supply Depot
12 Barracks
13 Refinery
14 Put 2 SCVs in gas
15 Orbital Command + Marine
16 Barracks + Reactor (on 1st Rax) + SCV + Drop MULE
17 Supply Depot + SCV
18 SCV
19 Supply Depot + 2 Marines + Tech Lab (on 2nd Rax)
From here it’s up to you! Monitor your Command Center and Barracks so you always have units being produced (but not queued up!). Make Supply Depots 1 after the other with the 1 SCV.
Here’s how the rest of the strategy plays out:
@~5:40 research Combat Shield (it will be our only upgrade the entire game)
@~7:00 Attack with your Marines & Marauders (if you execute perfectly you should have 15 Marines, 5 Marauders)
Move your Supply Depot SCV to your expansion after the 7th Depot – Halt Supply Depot production
@~7:30 Build a Command Center at your expansion
@~8:45 Build 2 Barracks (1 Reactor/1 Tech Lab)
Start building Supply Depots again
@~10:30 Build a Command Center
@~11:00 Attack with all units
@~12:00 Build 4 Barracks (2 Reactors/2 Tech Labs)
After you complete the build, expand and attack every 5 minutes starting at 15 – 15, 20, 25, 30. Turn all your CCs into Orbital Commands so you can keep dropping MULES Keep adding Barracks on when you find it hard to spend your money. Be sure not to add them on too soon. A good rule to follow is if you can queue up 2 rounds of units in every Barracks & CC and still have money left over, use it to build Barracks. Don’t be afraid to make a lot of Barracks! You’re going to have a ton of money to spend.
So that’s it! As you can see it’s very simple, you’ll only be making Marines, Marauders, and SCVs the whole game…a LOT of them. Don’t bother with any upgrades either, nothing should take your focus away from SCVs, Supply Depots, and Units. Make it a goal not to get supply blocked the entire game.
If you’re in Bronze, Silver, even Gold, try this out and let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear your comments, suggestions, and any questions you might come up with.
Good luck!

When you effectively scout it lets you know what your opponent is doing, then you can create the required units to effectively counter them.
