Terran vs. Protoss Early Game Ghost Strategies

Terran vs. Protoss can be a difficult matchup as the Terran player, so we need every advantage we can get. With warp gates, a Protoss player can amass a huge army for an early game push that will stomp you into the ground if you're not ready for it. Here's some strategies you can use with ghosts that will help you survive and push forward to take the game.

An early Ghost Academy against Protoss players can provide you with a lot of useful tools to be able to survive and push out for an easy win. If you focus mostly on getting marines in the early game, you'll have enough gas to train a few ghosts and add them to your army. Ghosts bring some great abilities to the table, most notably EMP.

The early push by a Protoss player will usually consist of a mix of Zealots, Sentries, and Stalkers. How many of each will depend on the player. Zealots are tough meat shields, sentries will force field your escape route, and stalkers will shoot from the back to destroy your army quickly.

When you throw a couple ghosts into the mix, a well placed EMP or two can seriously cripple an advancing Protoss army. it will completely drain all the affected units shields, as well as the sentries' energy so they won't be able to cast any force fields. If the Protoss player doesn't back off or micro well, a small group of stimmed marines will easily take them out.

Once you have the combat shield and stim packs researched you should move out with a marine, medivac & ghost force. Many times you will be able to easily take the win as long as you can micro your ghosts well and cast EMP accurately.

Terran vs Protoss Early Scouting With A Purpose

You probably already know that scouting is a very important part of Starcraft 2. To be able to defend against your opponent you need to know what he's up to. Many players will choose not to scout for a long time, only to be overrun by units they weren't ready for. If you constantly scout your opponent this won't happen to you.

I want to specifically address early game scouting in this post though. Many players have watched replays where pro players send their scouts out really early so they follow suit and do the same. But if you don't know what to look for then your scout really is pointless and you shouldn't even bother.

Another mistake that many players make is to get an early SCV into their opponent's base, but then just check right around the mineral line for buildings to see what's going on. It's very important to keep track where your opponent's buildings are, and if their hiding any tech to try and find it.

The video below is a great example. It's a Terran vs Protoss matchup where the Protoss player tries to hide his Stargate in the corner of his base for a fast void ray rush. Since Terran was being proactive with his scout, he decided to check out the WHOLE Protoss base and was able to see the Stargate going up in the corner.

Without this knowledge Terran would have taken a lot of damage from an early Void Ray, but since he knew what Protoss was up to he was able to get Vikings and marines out in time to completely nullify the early aggression.

Terran vs Protoss Late Game Strategies & Tactics

The Terran vs Protoss matchups are usually pretty dynamic since there's so many options each player can choose to tech up to. This game is no different. Most tournament games so far only last about 10-15 minutes, but this game is just epic. Here's a Terran vs Protoss game that lasts over 30 minutes real time. It was played on Lost Temple, and almost all of the expansions were taken at one point or another in this game…craziness.

The Terran player has some great strategies and tactics showcased here. He starts out with a refinery before the barracks so he can wall off with a very fast factory/barracks combo. He immediately trains a reaper and a hellion and starts harassing the Protoss mineral line very early in the game.

Terran gets off to an early lead with a marauder and hellion push that destroys his opponent's natural expansion while he gets his own up and running. He then transitions into a lot of barracks for a fairly heavy marine/marauder army with some hellions. Protoss sees this and responds with Colossi so Terran starts pumping Vikings to deal with them.

This replay shows why it's so important to expand early and keep your economy high. Also how valuable it is to keep control of that center area as much as possible so you have vision of what your opponent is up to so you can keep them contained.

Immortals really shine as a meat shield for Stalkers and Colossi against a Tank heavy force. Absorbing all that splash damage and only taking 10 damage is huge since siege tanks shoot so slow in siege mode.

The Lost Temple has some high ground locations that you should keep thinking about throughout the whole game, not just for early harassment. The Terran player shows how much of a pain these can be by using just a couple of his vikings to harass the mineral line of the Protoss natural expansion. Always a good tactic to use to keep your opponent on his toes and distracted.

Blink stalkers are exceptionally difficult to deal with on maps like the Lost Temple where there is a narrow choke but a huge cliff that they can take advantage of with their blink ability. You must always watch for a Protoss player that uses blink effectively to get into the unguarded locations of your base to kill your unit producing abilities.

Medivacs are on your side though so while your opponent is distracted, load up a couple medivacs with marines and marauders to go take out any expansions that are vulnerable. If you can kill a couple of your opponents Nexus then you can pull ahead in the macro game and win the resource battle.

Always remember to keep teching and work up to the higher level units like Battlecruisers to support your army. It's important to remember the lower tier units as well though, as they never really become obsolete in Starcraft 2. Marines, marauders and hellions are always helpful and Battlecruisers are pretty vulnerable with no support.

Here's the epic Terran vs Protoss game that showcases all these tactics and strategies:

Pro Terran vs Protoss MMM Play Using No Ghosts

One of my favorite strategies to use against Protoss as a Terran player is to have a Barracks heavy composition with some Ghosts thrown in for EMP. But this match goes against that and opts for a mostly pure MMM ball. In this game the Terran player is QXC playing against a Protoss named CLARC.

QXC decides to skip Ghosts entirely, which allows him to use that money for some early aggression and a relatively quick expansion. Putting pressure on your opponent is one of the many key things you can do to throw his game off and get ahead in the macro battle.

Protoss does the right thing by teching straight for High Templar to storm the Terran MMM ball. But QXC has excellent positioning with his units and manages to keep a lot of them alive despite the many Psi Storms that get casted on him. The Protoss player also does something very smart which is to Feedback the Medivacs and prevent them from healing the damage done by storm and stim packs to the Terran infantry. At the end of the game you'll notice how low all their life is, if CLARC had just a few more units he would have been able to finish off that attack and stay in the game.

Here's the game…enjoy!

TvP Early Void Rush Defense Into MMM

Here’s a Terran vs Protoss matchup that showcases some really good play throughout the whole game. This game is played on Incineration Zone, which is a crazy map that is just tiny. It’s so small that you can actually see both natural expansions on one screen.

In the early game Protoss takes advantage of the small map and rushes with a single Void Ray. This can be a deadly first attack as many know, but Terran was able to defend against it with some great Viking micro.

The Terran player then does a great job of macroing and gets a big force of Marauders, Marines and Medivacs, but it runs into problems when Protoss gets those High Templars out. Psi Storms do so much damage to small infantry units if they aren’t dodged, it’s a great counter.

Terran then grabs some Ghosts to EMP the High Templar, but it’s not enough as his macro starts to slip and his unit production falls. I think Terran could have had this game, as he was leading in the mid game. The Protoss player was just a little more resourceful and able to keep expanding and remain at the high level of income needed to fuel his army.

Overall it’s some great Starcraft 2 Terran vs Protoss gameplay:

Terran vs. Protoss – Sweet Marines, Medivacs + Ghost Build

Terran vs. Protoss is a pretty dynamic matchup in Starcraft 2. There’s a lot of different strategies that both sides can do to throw each other off guard and snag the win. This video showcases some awesome Terran strategies with a main army that consists of Marines, Medivacs, and Ghosts.

Ghosts are a very powerful unit, especially against the Protoss because of their ability to EMP their shields away. The video is actually a Day[9] Daily, so it’s not just straight up Terran play. But Sean has some great insight and I think you’ll learn a lot from his commentary on Brat_OK’s Terran vs. Protoss gameplay.

Here’s the basic strategy that Brat_OK uses with his TvP build. He starts out with a very basic Terran build order. Supply Depot, Barracks, Refinery, Orbital Command, & a Tech Lab. The first unit he makes out of his Barracks is actually a Reaper. It’s pretty late for Reaper harass, but he uses it mostly for scouting rather than killing probes.

He then builds another Barracks w/ Reactor, grabs the second Refinery, and builds a Ghost Academy. Next tech to Medivacs and beef up Marines with Combat shield and Stim Packs. From there get Ghosts, maybe some Marauders, and power your way into the Protoss base.

It’s pretty slick, check it out below:
