Photon Cannon Rush – How To Defend It And Counter To Win

If you find yourself in a Terran vs Protoss matchup, then you are in a position to get Photon Cannon rushed. This is a strategy where the Protoss player will build only a Forge, then start placing Pylons and Photon Cannons near or in your base. As a Terran player, there are a couple good ways to defend this that we'll explore.

Terran Cannon Rush Counter Basics

The first thing you need to do to counter the Photon Cannon rush is find out when it's happening to you. Scouting early is essential. Right after you build your first Supply Depot you should send that SCV into your opponent's base or start looking for it (on a 2+ player map).

A sure sign that you're going to be Cannon rushed is either nothing in the Protoss base, or just a lone Pylon and a Forge. As soon as you see either of those you need to find out where he is building Pylons to rush you with. Take an SCV from your mineral line and start searching the dark spots inside your base first, then down the ramp if you see nothing.

Your Barracks should be up soon (if not already) so start making Marines and rally them to the Pylon. As soon as you see the first Cannon go up, attack it with your Marine and a couple SCV's. It's important that you attack the Cannons, not the Pylons. Pylons have 100 more hitpoints and all he will have to do is make another one to power the Cannons.

If he gets one or two Cannons up don't lose hope! Immediately build a Bunker to prevent further Cannons being built into your base. Fill it with Marines then add a Tech Lab to your Barracks and make some Marauders. You should build another Barracks & Tech Lab too to be sure you have enough Marauders.

If the Protoss player puts a Cannon in the right place, it will be able to shoot at your Bunker without getting hit. If this happens take the Marines out of your Bunker and put 2 Marauders in, they will be able to fight back and take out the Photon Cannon. From here it's just a matter of destroying his Cannons without losing too many of your troops.

Once you destroy the Probe, Pylons, and Cannons it's time to move out with all your forces and make your counter attack. The Protoss player will have no army, so you'll probably be able to march right up and take him out.

Countering the Protoss Photon Cannon rush as Terran is quite easy if you keep cool and remember what you just read. The key is to remember to do the normal stuff that you'd do and not let it mess your game up. Keep making SCV's, troops and Supply Depots while you're under pressure and you'll come out on top no problem.

If the Protoss player is more advanced he may just build a few Photon Cannons to contain you while he expands and gets a big army up. If this is the case, you'll need to kill the Cannons then macro hard to keep up with him and take the lead in the game.  To learn more about Macro check out my Starcraft 2 Macro guide.

Another way to counter it is to let him build his dumb cannons and make sure your barracks gets built. Micro your workers to collect away from the cannons reach (if you can) and keep pumping out marines but don’t rally them to the pylon just yet. Let the toss keep putting up cannons closer until you can’t avoid with your scvs anymore. At this point, lift your base and more it away to a close mineral field. Now he’s wasted tons of money and time on this and you’ve got a bunch of marines ready to go rip a new one in his base that’s full of nothing but probes. You might need to do some quick base repairs (on the far side of your base from the cannons) b/c when your probes aren’t in range, you’ll take damage. You can usually repair on the opposite side without getting hit though.

That’s an awesome strat to use. Make use of the Terran’s building mobility!

I’ve been cannon rushed I think five times in my league career thus far. It’s never worked, ever. I think the key is really just, first, to find out that that’s what he’s doing early enough, and second, to not panic. If a player panics, then they’ll do silly things like just sending each new unit towards the cannons on a suicide mission.

If I see that a cannon rush is the other guy’s game, I’ll always just roll my eyes and let him have his fun for a bit (or, if it’s in the early stages like the first pylon is just coming up, try to kill it off the bat to slow him down), build up a good force of marauders, and then just demolish the whole thing, then mop up. Marauders are absolute beasts against proton cannons.

I did have one strategy a guy pulled that *almost* got me, though. The guy not only started putting his crap in my base, but he also put down assimilators on both of my geysers in an attempt to stop me from being able to make marauders. I thought this was a pretty darn brilliant idea, and if I hadn’t been able to stop it, I’d have been in a pretty poor position.

Nice work stopping them all, I’ve lost to a couple myself and it can be frustrating =). That’s a good idea stealing the gas like that, Cannons rip Marines apart.

that happened to me today, but i survived too :)

I also should say that if you defeat his first cannon rush, you might want to invest in siege tanks just in case he’s still got some game left, if the game has been going for a while. I had this one guy who cannon rushed me, but then when I went to his base to mop up, he had put up a veritable circular wall of cannons by the time I got there, which my force wasn’t equipped well enough to overcome. I hadn’t expected he’d have had the minerals to do this, and I knew it’d be incredibly costly to make tons of infantry to throw themselves at it, so I had to wait to build a factory to get some siege tech out, and by that time he had transitioned to immortals and colossi.

I still managed to win, but I had to give him credit for tenacity, and I had to kick myself for not being prepared for the possibility that I would encounter significant resistance in his base.

I’d be interested to see someone use a Cannon rush as a way to stall and tech up, like you went up against. It seems like it’s just too expensive to be viable though. Nice job taking him out though.

Early cannon rush ??? Easy win if you play terran… I allow him to build more and more cannons until they reach my buildings, then lift off with my Command Center (+ scv’s ofc) & barracks and place them next to a rich mineral field.. So now he has some useless cannons, and I got a huuuge income in exchange. Start pumping marines out of multiple barracks and you should be able to defend any possible next harassment. Soon enough you will have a big army while your opponent will be still building his gateways. Time to push and make him look silly.

I HATE THE PHOTON CANON RUSH! If you don’t want to play the game then go play some other game – let those of us that want to play the game play! The canon rush is bullshit!!

  • SpitefulFrog

I have been getting cannon rushed much more often. The first two times I panicked and lost. This is what Protoss wants, whether the rush is to win or just harass, they want to you panick, so don’t. Stay calm. I have tried defending by preventing the probe from laying down the pylon or cannons. All this does is pull probes off the line. I have also tried lifting off my base, and this works to the point that most Protoss quit as soon as I establish a new base and build a bunker at the bottom of the ramp. I don’t bother stopping the probe. Let him keep building pylons and cannons. Keep your base at your start until the cannons get close enough to fire on your base, then lift off. Get a bunker near the bottom of your ramp. They might send in some zealots, just micro your marines and pull your scvs to your bunker. Get stim. Keep pumping marines and a few mauraders. Get your factory up. Add a tech lab, get siege mode. Move on his base.

I simply start my game building 3 s/ds at my ramp with 2 suvs. This renders cannon rush impossible and keeps him in the dark.

Does anyone see any flaws in that? Because its been working for me.

Minimal eco loss compared to the headache of chasing that little fucking probe around.

    • Taerix

This is a strategy you can use, but the problem you’ll run into is if your opponent doesn’t go for a cannon rush, but a quick Stalker or Zealot. Since you used so many minerals building your supply depots you won’t have a Barracks and Marines out to defend early enough.

But…until you start running into that more, I’d say go with it.

  • SlyGuise

Well 3 supply depots work it would probably be better if you could go 2depot 1 rax wall off and then about 6 marines with scvs can hold off some early zealots or even a few stalkers. Throw in a bunker if you feel like your getting beat too much up front.

Btw this isnt necessarily cannon rush but watch out for a crafty toss player who puts a pylon outside of your base and will use his probe as vision to warp in units right under your nose
