Starcraft Master Achievement Guide – How To Beat Every Round

Starcraft Master Portrait AchievementBlizzard recently came out with a new custom game mod called Starcraft Master. Along with it came 7 new achievements: Starcraft Pupil, Starcraft Apprentice, Starcraft Expert, Starcraft Master, Safe Zone, Whack-a-Roach and Blink of an Eye. Plus a cool new portrait to add to your collection. I don’t talk about it much on here, but I have a little ‘OCD’ with achievements so I had to play through Starcraft Master so I could get them all.

It was a lot of fun too! Got to practice some new micro that I hadn’t done before, and also use some of things I do in a lot of real games. Very cool mod.

I went ahead and recorded a bunch of videos showing exactly how to beat each challenge in case you had trouble with any of them. I go through and explain what the easiest way to complete each challenge (that I could find) then show how to execute it. I put them into 30 separate short videos so you could skip to the one you’re having trouble with. Hope it helps you out!

How To Beat Zealot/Archon Mix – Late Game Terran vs Protoss

Terran vs Protoss can be a very difficult matchup for us Terran players, as the Protoss has quite a few tech choices to tear apart Terrans who get caught off guard. If they tech switch into heavy Colossus, it’s easy to scout it too late and not be able to get enough Vikings to deal with it. On the other hand if the start with Colossus and switch over, you can be left with Vikings that are almost useless.

One of the deadly combinations that Protoss has available (and is able to switch into easily at any time) is the Zealot/Archon combo. Archons are made by 2 Templar (Dark or High) which are very gas heavy. This leaves a ton of minerals to dump into Zealots and quickly form a big army.

Why is Zealot/Archon so effective against Terran?

Well, if you’ve run into a Zealot/Archon army before you probably know the answer. Zealots are extremely tough units that form a great meat-shield for the Archons. While all your units are firing on the Zealots charging in on them, the Archons sit back at range 3 and roast your bio units in short order.

1 fully upgraded Archon hits biological units for 47 each hit! Plus that’s splash damage hitting everything nearby too. That’s why your armies tend to melt when you’re up against this combo.

Archons are really hard to kill because they technically have 360 health. That’s more than 2 Zealots combined (@150 each). Plus, neither Zealots nor Archons are Armored units, making it so Marauders only do 10 dmg per shot, severely crippling bio DPS.

How To Get Out Of Bronze With Macro And Develop Good SC 2 Habits

Today I want to show you how to get out of the bronze league without using cheese, 1 base all-ins, or any other tactics that won’t make you a better Starcraft 2 player. Cheese and “1-basing” your opponent is 1 way to get promoted, but eventually you’ll hit a plateau where that 1 strategy doesn’t work anymore, and you’ll either have to find a new strategy (that won’t work very long either) or start over and learn how to macro.

The big problem I have with cheesing your opponent every time is that you don’t really get better at Starcraft 2. You just get better at performing that 1 cheese strategy. And usually, if your opponent holds it off you have no chance of winning because you don’t know how to follow it up.

Macro Is King At The Higher Levels

If you watch any pro games, you’ll notice that the games usually go long and are very macro based (meaning they expand a lot and have huge economies). If you ever want to get even close to that level, you need to STOP cheesing all the time. Instead, right from the beginning you should start developing good macro habits that will stick with you permanently.

But how do you get better at “macro?” A lot of people think it’s going to be too difficult, no fun, and they’ll never be able to do it so why bother.

Not true!

In fact, it’s almost the opposite. If you’ve got a plan (which I’m going to give you) it’s easy to develop good macro habits, and you’re going to have more fun, especially as you steamroll your way up the Battle.net ladder.

Starcraft 2 Units – Stat Reference Sheets for Terran, Zerg, & Protoss

If you want to get better at Starcraft 2, one of the very first things you should focus on is memorizing the stats of Starcraft 2 units for Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. If you don’t know what the different units in the game do, then it’s easy to lose just because you didn’t know that Zerg Banelings are a hard counter to Terran Marines.

Get your Starcraft 2 Unit Stats Sheets

In total, there’s 12-14 units in each race that you need to memorize. You need to know their unit type, cost, build time, life, armor, movement speed, sight range, attack range, attack speed, damage, damage vs (light, armored, massive, etc), how to produce them, and what tech is required. Not only that, but some Starcraft 2 units have 2 different attacks or other special abilities.

It’s a lot to learn isn’t it? Especially if you’re new to the game!

It can be pretty overwhelming…which is exactly the reason that I created (printable) Starcraft 2 unit reference sheets for you to keep handy while you’re playing the game. There’s 1 page for each race: Terran, Zerg, & Protoss.

Each page has 14 SC 2 units on it that you must know about to start winning more games. And yes, they’re updated for Patch 1.4.2!

Terran 2 Barracks (2 Rax) Expand Opening – TvP Strategy

The Terran vs Protoss matchup can be kind of tricky. If you get too greedy in the beginning and fast expand it can be really hard to hold off a Protoss 4 Gate push. If you go for a 1 base all-in (like a 3 Rax) and a good player defends it you’ll be dead in the water heading into the mid game and surely lose. So what’s a Terran player to do?

The 2 Rax Expand Opening – Terran vs Protoss

2 Rax Opening

I’ve been wanting to change my Terran vs Protoss strategy (the one I use most anyway) to a more aggressive build that allows me to attack a bit sooner, but still not sacrifice my economy. The strategy I’ve been using most lately is a 1 Barracks fast expand into 3 Orbital Commands quite early, which is quite vulnerable to 1 base timings.

So I did some looking around and whaddya know, Day [9] just did a daily about the Terran 2 Rax expand opening against Protoss. Perfect!

I think this build is just what I’m looking for because it pressures the Protoss early on when Marines and Marauders are most powerful (in small numbers) and it still allows you to get 2 bases (sometimes 3) relatively quickly. It’s a fun Terran build order and a great middle road strategy between all-in and heavy macro.

Proxy Thorship In TvT – Quick 1 Base Wins With Terran

Hey guys, today I wanted to share a strategy that I just learned from HotKeyIt (a premium service where pros teach strategies). It’s called the Proxy Thorship strategy, and it looks totally fun. Keep in mind the guy teaching this strategy – vVvRuFF – is a Grandmaster Terran so it’s not like he’s trying these strats out on noobs.

Proxy Thorship Strategy:

Terran Thorship FTW!

The Proxy Thorship strategy is a 1 base aggressive play, and can transition into a macro play quite nicely if you don’t kill your opponent outright. It’s no Fast Expand though, so if you do no damage with your Thors you’re going to get beaten in the long run. The point is to get your Thors into the enemy base and do as much damage as possible. You’ll likely get a lot of quick wins if you execute the build well.

Terran Building Placement Strategy – Xel’Naga Caverns

Xel'Naga Caverns

Building placement is a very important thing to get down as a Terran player.  The way you set up your buildings can literally mean the difference between a win and a loss, especially against Zerg. Zerg has the most mobile units and the main composition that Terrans use to fight them is very slow (Tanks & Marines).

The way this usually plays out is like this: When the Terran gets a nice army created and moves out, Zerglings, Banelings, or Mutalisks swoop in from a vulnerable location and decimate your expansions, SCVs, and anything else that’s vulnerable. If this has ever happened to you, you know how maddening it is!

To prevent this and/or at least slow it down, place your buildings in key locations to block off troop movement. You’re going to build them anyway, so you might as well get full use out of them. And if you’re worried about them getting destroyed, don’t be. It’s much better to be alerted to a counter-attack early and possibly lose a Supply Depot, then to have a mass of Zerglings in your mineral line out of nowhere.

The Fastest Way To Improve Your Starcraft 2 Skills & Ladder Rank

The fastest way to improve in Starcraft 2 is a mysterious thing. If you go to the forums you’ll hear a lot of stuff like: “Work on your macro” “Just play more” “Watch the pros and copy them” or “Watch Day [9].” While much of this is good advice, what if you don’t have a ton of time to devote to Starcraft 2?

I run a business (not related to Starcraft 2) which sometimes means long hours and lots of responsibilty. So I don’t have 5 hours a day to practice, watch the pros, watch Day [9], etc. I need to spend my time wisely if I want to have any chance of improving at the game. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t do it perfectly. Sometimes I’ll find myself watching something that really won’t help me get better just for entertainment value (which isn’t always bad).

But if you really want to get better at the Starcraft 2, climb the ladder in your division, improve your skills, wow your friends, etc. then you need to FOCUS. Here’s what I’ve been doing that’s helped tremendously…

The iEchoic Build – New Strat For Terran vs Terran

Ok, I understand the growing intensity of TvT. So I've been taught a strat that may even be new to most of the community. Ok so the basic idea of Terran is to have a good economy (check Taerix's Macro Mastery Guide) and to keep units producing out of structures constantly (hotkeys will help). There are only so many options for the terran race, but to be successful in TvT you will see that there are only so many options.

To find out your options you need to scout, if you see fast 2 Rax don't just play standard (you're being rushed) so react to your scouts. But with this build there is really only 1 unit that could hurt you… the Thor. But, you can easily react and if used right your opponent won't have a good enough economy to really afford Thors. The build is called the iEchoic build. Follow below as a display the build and when and what to do.

10/11 depot
12/19 barracks
13/19 gas
15/19 orbital command (manage between scv/marine)
16/19 depot
18/27 factory (sooner if you have 100 gas)
18/27 tech lab on barracks

Next….
  • switch barracks and factory
  • research blue flame
  • starport when barracks is done
  • keep making hellions
  • 2nd starport when 1st is done
  • tech lab on starport
  • research cloak
  • reactor on barracks
  • drop off 4 hellions and try to do as much damage to the worker line as possible
  • build vikings out of 2nd starport
  • banshees out of 1st
  • harass opponent to death or attack if he suicides army/ takes heavy losses
  • expand at 35 supply
  • if opponent is not harassing/attacking tech to battle cruisers before attacking.

So see this build is all about air control, if you lose air control then you lose the battle. The first 4 hellions should do lots of damage, but do not lose them. The main idea is for the banshees to kill any tanks, hellions for the light units, vikings for the air control (can upgrade if opponent is enlarging air force) and the marines help with air/support for the army.

Basic idea was not to engage until you had battlecruisers, but every time I've done this build it has been successful without BC's, because all the harassment usually forces them to go all in and they die. But if your opponent uses thors (with harassment they will probably not) add on a barracks.

This build can only afford really just 1 scan if your on 1 base, so mules are the best thing to make this build work and run fast.

So this is the iEchoic build, enjoy and tell your friends about it , because i believe this build will change the face of TvT.

5 Ways To Improve Your Game Drastically (Without Even Playing!)

1. Play with a friend!

Starcraft is a LOT of fun. Even more so if you have a buddy to play with, and the more friends, the merrier! This not only increases the fun factor, but also makes you WANT to play more (friendly competition), and may even FORCE you to play more (e.g. if you all have scheduled a certain time to play after work). Having a friend to play with will also allow some low-pressure games where you can try different things out (e.g. different build orders, different strategies, new micro tricks) and you won't feel as pressured as if you were playing a ladder game.

Having a friend also allows for good team games, where you both can agree on strategies beforehand, talk thru the game, and discuss the game after. Talking about the game after will also allow for you to see where your flaws are, so you can improve. If you have no-one to talk to about Starcraft, you might not be as excited to play, and may likely not play as well as if you did. So if you're the lone warrior trying to battle it out online, get one of your friends a copy of the game – games make GREAT birthday gifts, and you'll have someone to train with.

If none of your friends are interested in games, it's almost impossible to NOT find a friend online, or on battle.net – join a forum, a chat-room, or a channel, and you're almost sure to find someone of your skill level who wants to get better too – maybe even from halfway across the globe! Battle.net is also great at putting you up against opponents who are about the same skill level as you are, and it's hard to not make a friend sooner or later. Some of the most raging battles can produce some great friendships, as many pro-gamers will tell you.

2. Have fun!

You'll play much better if you relax and remember that despite the sophistication, it's a GAME after all, so sometime it's good to just play for fun, and not worry about winning or losing. Talk in game, try some ridiculous builds (like high templar only) play some tag-team matches, knockout matches, play with a different race or random, or even try to rush with your workers or float all your buildings over your enemy just to have a laugh. You'll find that you play better and more focused, once you're more relaxed.

Many players are afraid of losing, and will shy away from playing ladder matches, 1v1 or even multiplayer at all, but it's the BEST way to get better – no pain no gain, and even the best players lose matches on a very regular basis – SOMEONE has to lose right? So don't be afraid to just have fun even if you lose – you'll end up with a lot less grey hairs!

You don't even need to be in-game to have fun – be creative - youtube is full of good laughs with people doing things like unit impersonations and impressions. You don't have to be a great player to enjoy the game and have fun, but you'll become a better player doing so.

3. Spectate or download replays

If you just don't feel like you're getting better, spectate a match or two! You'll get to see things from the perspective of both players, and you can observe some of the mistakes that they make. Perhaps you make the same mistakes too and never realized it! It's always different when you're on the outside looking in. Spectating also lets you appreciate other aspects of the game that you'd be too busy to appreciate when you play, like the game's graphics and physics.

You can also download replays and observe how others play. You may well find yourself thinking 'hmmm maybe I can use that build' or 'wow, that's a really interesting way to fight off that cheese tactic'. Replays in starcraft 2 are amazing in that there's so much in game information you can pull up (and they're hot-keyed too!) to see what's being done at what time, how many workers/army a player has, resource count, apm and much more. You can even see where a player clicks and what he sees with player camera control and vision.

Download one now and see what you learn!

4. Read more

You've just lost 4 games in a row to the same strategy. You just can't seem to figure out what you're doing wrong. Well somewhere out there, there's another player who has had the same problem as you, and has probably written all about it, or has invented a perfect counter strategy to it that you can read about online, like at starcraft2terranstrategies.com

'It's all been done', and it's probably floating around online somewhere, waiting for you to google it. You can learn a lot by just reading more and immersing yourself in the Starcraft environment. You can even put together a compilation of some pro tips that you might have found online and stick it just below your monitor so when you're in game you can glance down and remember things that you would have otherwise forgotten in the heat of the battle (who hasn't at some time or the other become supply blocked?).

5. Watch the pros

These days, it's easy to find replays of the pros, and you can even view matches online, complete with amazing commentaries from pro players, even if the game being broadcast isn't played by pros. Starcraft commentators these days are arguably even better and more informative than most of the sports commentators you'd find on tv, and you can have a lot of laughs listening to some of the good ones.

You'll also hear critique on what is going on (even if you haven't a clue), both the good and the bad, and you can apply some of what you learn to your own game. There is a wealth of pro-level starcraft 2 material all over the net – replays, live streams, youtube, interviews, and much more. Look up your favorite player and watch some of his/her replays. See what they're doing that you aren't, or how they deal with situations that you may have thought were totally hopeless. Many of the pro players spend just as much time looking at replays as playing themselves, so why shouldn't you?

This strategy brought to you by Zan

Zan is an old Starcraft/Brood War player who recently made the switch to Starcraft 2. He is making lots of mistakes but learning quickly from them as he goes along. You can learn about most of his blunders and close calls at Starcraft2TerranStrategies.com. He can be seen trying to fight under the name "klesk" on battlenet, so feel free to take advantage of his general n00bishness if you see him there – you'll get a chance to read about what he's learned from it here!
